United States due to “hype” around the visit of Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, they are trying to divert public attention from internal problems and the situation in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on Sputnik radio.

“This is an absolute catastrophe that the United States themselves created with their own hands around Ukraine, the failure of everything that is connected in this regard in the European direction. <…> The situation of impasse required a sharp shift in the informational paradigm, which Pelosi did, — noted the diplomat.

Pelosi flew to Taiwan on the evening of August 2. She visited the Taiwanese parliament, met with President Tsai Ing-wen, and called the island “one of the freest societies in the world.” She explained that she visited Taiwan unannounced to show support for the “vibrant and dynamic” democracy in this country.

In Beijing, Pelosi was criticized even before the visit officially took place, and pointed out that the visit would undermine relations with Washington. After Pelosi landed at the Taipei airport, the Chinese military began a shooting exercise near the island, Taiwan responded by increasing its combat readiness. The Foreign Ministry decided that the United States was thus provoking China and trying to contain its rise.
