Russian anti-aircraft gunner called HIMARS missiles the most difficult target for air defense

An anti-aircraft gunner from the “O” group spoke about HIMARS missiles shot down in the Donbass from the Buk air defense system

The task of shooting down HIMARS multiple rocket launchers used by the Ukrainian army is difficult, said an anti-aircraft troops officer from grouping “O”, reports “RIA Novosti” (The agency calls this group of troops the Courageous.) However, the Buk M-3 air defense systems allow you to do this.

“The most difficult target we have worked on is HIMARS rockets. These projectiles fly at very high altitudes. We at least detect [them at an altitude] up to 22 thousand meters. The difficulty lies in the fact that the range is short, the time for making a decision is minimal, — said the anti-aircraft gunner. The effective dispersion area (EPR, a characteristic showing the radar visibility of the target) of HIMARS shells, according to him, is only 0.1, which further complicates the task.

At the same time, according to the officer, the Russian military cope with task “literally within ten seconds” with the help of the Buk M-3 anti-aircraft missile system. The anti-aircraft gunner also stated that his battery “has already shot down more than one HIMARS in the sky of Donbass.”

The Ukrainian military received HIMARS systems from the United States as military assistance to counter Russia at the end of June. Mark Milli, head of the US Armed Forces Chiefs of Staff Committee, said that the country received 12 out of 20 complexes.

On July 24, the head of the office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, said that the United States could increase the supply of MLRS to 25–30 units and send them ammunition. The statement was made with reference to the words of Adam Smith, Chairman of the Committee on Armed Forces of the US House of Representatives.

In mid-July, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced four destroyed HIMARS. The day before, the department reported that the military destroyed a transshipment base with US-supplied ammunition for HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems in the Khmelnytsky region.
