Ryabkov: US asked to recognize Americans detained in battles in Ukraine as combatants According to Ryabkov, the participation of foreign mercenaries on the side of Ukrainian forces is “one of the most serious new problematic moments” in Russia's relations with the US and other Western countries
The United States asked to recognize the American mercenaries detained in Ukraine as combatants, but there is no dialogue on this issue, Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said.
“As far as I understand, the topic has not been continued. There was a certain signal from the American side, mainly focused on the fact that these persons should be classified as combatants within the meaning of the Geneva Conventions, they should be subject to appropriate obligations, — said Ryabkov.
Combatants— these are those who directly participate in the fighting as part of one of the parties to the conflict and receive a special legal status in this capacity. Once in the hands of the enemy, such persons have the right to be treated as prisoners of war, they are also exempt from criminal liability, since, according to international law, the military is only liable for crimes not caused by military necessity.
According to Ryabkov, the investigation into the mercenaries detained in Ukraine continues. It also turns out how they got into the war zone and what role they played there.
According to the Deputy Minister, the factor of foreign mercenarism and the actions of mercenaries on the side of the Ukrainian forces— “one of the most serious new problematic points” in Russia's relations with the United States and other Western countries. At the same time, the Russian authorities have repeatedly warned citizens from unfriendly countries “to refrain from adventurous plans” to prove themselves on the battlefield. in Ukraine,” he noted.
“Those who ignore these warnings reap the fruits of their own misanthropy and unwillingness to perceive the reality that has developed in this region,”— said Ryabkov.

In early June, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that foreign mercenaries who are participating in hostilities on the side of Ukraine will not be able to claim to be treated as prisoners of war. “In accordance with international humanitarian law, mercenaries are not combatants, and the best that awaits them, — criminal liability»,— said the department.
Foreigners for participating in the fighting on the side were detained, including British citizens Sean Pinner and Aiden Aslin, as well as Moroccan Saadoun Brahim. They were tried in the DPR, where they were sentenced to death for mercenarism.
London called this sentence fictitious, saying that it considers the convicted prisoners of war. The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, compared the UK's reaction to hysteria, noting that the country had not previously applied to the DPR about its citizens, from which we can conclude that so far their fate has not “essentially interested” anyone.
