The United States and its allies are preparing for a protracted conflict in Ukraine, the Washington Post writes, citing sources.
According to one of the interlocutors of the publication in the State Department, the possibility of prolonged hostilities was discussed in the White House even before the start of the Russian special operation, when the media began to report on the likelihood of an armed conflict. The official explained that the increase in the supply of American weapons to Ukraine is precisely aimed at preventing the prolongation of hostilities: Washington is trying to get Moscow to refuse to continue them and at the same time strengthen Kyiv's position in peace negotiations.
According to a State Department official, the US administration assumes that Russia's achievement of its goals in Ukraine would be “very bad”; for the United States, its allies and the international community.
The United States, as well as the EU countries, Australia, Canada, after the start of the Russian military operation, delivered several packages of military assistance to Ukraine. In April, Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine, complained that the EU was not supplying Kyiv with the weapons it needed, and that the deliveries themselves were taking too long. President Volodymyr Zelensky asked for planes, missiles, and “anything” with which to defend the country. At the end of the same month, he declared that he was “finally heard”; and Ukraine receives the weapons it asked for.
In early June, the US authorities announced that they would supply Ukraine with HIMARS MLRS, other weapons, ammunition and equipment as part of a $700 million military aid package.
The Russian authorities condemn the transfer of weapons to Kyiv. According to President Vladimir Putin, the purpose of the “fuss” around such supplies— prolong the conflict as much as possible. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that since NATO “enters into a war with Russia through a proxy and arms this proxy, then in war as in war.”

At the same time, Moscow emphasizes that the goals of the military operation in Ukraine will be fulfilled, despite the “pumping” Kyiv with Western weapons.
