German Chancellor Olaf Scholz should stop trying to balance between Moscow and Kyiv and choose his side, said in an interview President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky told ZDF.
He recalled that Germany began to help Ukraine later than other European countries, especially the states of NATO's eastern flank.
“We need Chancellor Scholz to assure us that that Germany will support Ukraine. He and his government must make a decision: you cannot try to balance between Ukraine and relations with Russia, you must choose for yourself where to prioritize,— said Zelensky.
According to him, no matter which side Berlin chooses, it will be “economically painful.” However, “choosing the less painful path” this is the wrong approach,” the president added.
Disagreements between Ukraine and Germany are caused, among other things, by delays in the supply of heavy weapons. In particular, on June 1, Scholz promised to transfer weapons to Kyiv, with which he would be able to “defend an entire large city,” — howitzers, air defense systems and radars. However, since that time, only spare parts have been transferred to Kyiv, Spiegel reported.
According to the publication, Berlin is also postponing the delivery of tanks to Kyiv. According to his sources, Germany fears that Ukraine “might become overconfident” if it scores a series of major victories. In this case, there is a risk that it will invade Russia and “German tanks will again be on Russian territory,” said the interlocutors of the publication close to the German government.

Russian authorities have repeatedly warned that a transport of Western weapons arriving in Ukraine would be a “legitimate target”; for the Russian military. According to presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Moscow will achieve the goals of the special operation “in any case,” and such deliveries will only “cause more suffering for Ukraine, which is just a tool in the hands of those countries that supply [weapons] there.”
